NLC Congressional City Conference

Synopsis

Youth are an often-overlooked population when communities focus on housing; this disparity grows in significance when it comes to youth in the juvenile justice system. However, as Congress recently acknowledged in reforms to the Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act (JJDPA), housing, youth development and quality of life/public safety go hand in hand. This panel discussion will provide community leaders with the latest research about the intersection between youth homelessness and juvenile justice. Learn concrete steps that cities, towns and villages can take, often in partnerships with states or counties, to ensure all youth have safe, stable housing and to reduce the risk of juvenile justice involvement among unstably housed youth.

Speakers

  • Michelle M. Garcia Director - District of Columbia Office of Victim Services and Justice Grants (OVSJG)
  • Naomi Smoot Executive Director - Coalition for Juvenile Justice
