NLC Congressional City Conference

Synopsis

The rise of the so-called “gig economy” and independent work more broadly are changing the way people pay their bills, develop their careers, participate in their communities, and plan for economic hardship. In this session, Samaschool, a national expert in independent work, will explain what this shift means for individuals and cities. We will focus on preparing participants with practical policy tools, tips, and examples that will help ensure that your community is ready for this future of work.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will understand the size and scope of independent work, the trends in this part of the labor market, and projections for future growth.
  • Participants will review, consider, and discuss a set of policy proposals that can help ensure that their communities are ready to respond to this shift in the workforce and that growing numbers of independent workers are protected and supported by local government.
