NLC Congressional City Conference

Synopsis

Cities are experiencing more frequent and complex extreme events that disproportionately impact communities of color, people with disabilities, and other disadvantaged communities. This 90-minute workshop will introduce elected officials to the basic concepts of emergency management essential to effective and inclusive leadership through all of its phases (Preparedness, Mitigation, Response, Recovery).

Attendees will learn about:

  • Understanding their role as elected official working with emergency management staff
  • Creating equitable plans and strategies within each phase
  • Collaborating with diverse stakeholders to build resilience capacity
  • Pre-disaster contracts and resources, and equitably allocating mitigation and recovery resources
  • FEMA basics including the FEMA Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities Grant program (BRIC)
