Session

Homelessness in Focus: Local Government Roles in Intervention and Prevention

Time: 10:15 am - 11:30 am

Date: March 14, 2022

Location: Liberty Salons MNOP

Description

• Gain a fresh understanding of the multiple factors in homelessness and how cities can respond.
• Learn how municipal leaders can direct resources to assisting people to move out of encampments and into safe, quality and affordable housing.
• Find out how communities can intervene to address conditions that often lead to homelessness through eviction prevention and other strategies.

For various reasons—including a severe shortage of affordable housing, uncoordinated policies, a lack of resources at every level of government, and COVID-19—the numbers of homeless encampments and individuals experiencing homelessness have grown in cities nationwide.
At the same time, community responses to encampments have varied based on competing priorities of diverse stakeholders, including encampment residents, business owners, public health and safety officials, community residents and advocates. In this this workshop, participants will gain fresh perspectives and hear about promising strategies for servicing encampments and addressing and ending homelessness, while learning about federal programs that can help.
