David Luna

The first Hispanic to serve on the Mesa City Council, David Luna was appointed to fill the vacant District 5 seat in September of 2013 before winning election for a full term in August of 2014. He was named the Vice Mayor on January 23, 2017. Luna served as chair of the NLC Information Technology and Communication Committee for 2017,  and Vice Chair of the committee in 2016. Luna serves on the NLC Board of Directors and is also the Second Vice President of the NLC Hispanic Elected Local Officials Board of Directors. Luna is the chair of the Mesa Community College at Red Mountain Community Advisory Committee and was the past chair of the City of Mesa Human Relation Advisory Board. Luna spent more than 30 years working for Mesa Public Schools, and spent time as an adjunct professor for both Arizona State University and Mesa Community College. Luna has received numerous awards, and was the City of Mesa’s Citizen of the Year in 2012. Luna earned his B.A. in Radio/Television from the University of Arizona in 1979, a Master of Mass Communication from Arizona State University in 1999, and his Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University in 2012.
