Larry Hanson currently oversees an organization of nearly 100 employees providing services in the areas of Legislative Advocacy, Training and Education, Retirement and Insurance Benefits, and Member Services for 521-member cities. Hanson also serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the Georgia Municipal Employees Benefit System and the Georgia Cities Foundation. Prior to his employment with GMA in December of 2017, Hanson served as City Manager for the City of Valdosta for over 22 years. Hanson is a graduate of Valdosta State University, and currently serves as President of the Valdosta State University Alumni Association and on the VSU Foundation Board. Hanson serves on several national and state committees, and recently served on the Georgia Department of Community Affairs Board as Vice Chairman. He is also a past president of the Georgia City-County Management Association. Hanson was appointed by the US Air Force to the Air Combat Command Commander’s Group, by US Senator David Perdue to his Military Community Group, and by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce to a newly formed Military Advisory Committee. Throughout his career, Larry has received numerous awards for his leadership and public service, and in 2011, was inducted into the Georgia Municipal Association’s Municipal Government Hall of Fame. Georgia Trend recognized Hanson in 2017 as a Notable Georgian and in 2018 as one of the 100 Most Influential Georgians.
